◆剧情◆

  来自东欧的维克多·纳沃斯基(汤姆·汉克斯),当初为了要躲避战火才离开祖国,但谁想到就他在前往美国的空中飞行过程中,他的家乡就陷入了一场突如其来的政变。进退两难的维克多只能带着他那本来自一个不存在的国家的护照滞留在肯尼迪国际机场,因为不被允许踏入美国国土半步,他只能一直呆在机场的休息室里,等待着祖国战争结束的那一天。

◆台前◆

  一部由五座奥斯卡奖得主(而且都是极有分量的最佳导演奖和演员奖)倾力打造的电影,会不会值得你去期待?

  两座奥斯卡最佳导演奖(《辛德勒的名单》、《拯救大兵瑞恩》)的得主斯蒂文·斯皮尔伯格大家是再熟悉不过了,这位天才导演既是美国电影的奇迹,又是票房的保证。斯皮尔伯格善于用电影制造梦幻,充满冒险与科幻色彩一直是他作品的一大特色,《大白鲨》、《E.T.》、《第三类接触》、《夺宝奇兵》、《侏罗纪公园》,还有《人工智能》,或惊险刺激,或感人至深。而人性主题的表现又是他电影的另外一个特质,《紫色》、《辛德勒的名单》、《拯救大兵瑞恩》,都曾使我们受到深深地感动与震撼。
  历史上唯一连续两次获得奥斯卡最佳男主角(《费城故事》、《阿甘正传》)的汤姆·汉克斯,不仅是名副其实的lady killer(《师奶杀手》),而且在从艺几十年中一直受到了全世界影迷的喜欢与拥戴。《费城故事》中直面人生的安德鲁,《西雅图夜未眠》中专注神情的父亲,《阿甘正传》中憨直善良的阿甘,《阿波罗13》中的太空英雄弗洛尔,《拯救大兵瑞恩》中重情重义的上尉米勒。出道这么多年他塑造出形神逼真的各种人物形象,也成为观众心中名副其实的影帝。汤姆·汉克斯被誉为当代演技的活教科书,他扮演的阿甘甚至已经成为了美国精神的代名词。

  1998年,斯蒂文·斯皮尔伯格和汤姆汉克斯联手打造了《拯救大兵瑞恩》,不但大获成功,还使斯皮尔伯格再次捧得一座小金人。从此二人开始了强强合作。2001年,斯皮尔伯格做制片,汉克斯做导演,二人再度合作在HBO推出电视剧集《兄弟连》,同样大获全胜,不仅观众的好评如潮,还使"演而优则导"的汉克斯捧回了艾美奖迷你剧集或电视电影最佳导演,这也是他的导演处女作。去年夏天,二人又联手迪卡普里奥,拍摄了人物传记片《逍遥法外》,再创高峰。影迷们更是将二人看作是像马丁·斯科西斯+罗伯特·德尼罗、黑泽明+三船敏郎这样的导演加演员的黄金搭档。
  而有趣的是,另一位参演的凯瑟琳·泽塔-琼斯当年也是因为引起斯皮尔伯格的注意才在其做监制的《佐罗的面具》中崭露头角,从此开始了好莱坞的星程的。如此看来,这次的铁三角中大家都是有过良好合作的故人啊。

◆幕后◆

  与《电话亭》、《泰坦尼克》、《最后一班地铁》一样,《幸福终点站》也是一部人物活动局限在一定空间内的电影。只不过,这次空间转换成了机场。机场在人们眼中往往是一个中转站,它是旅途的一部分,人们却不会在这里久留。机场也是一个很神奇的地方,随时都充满了相聚与分离,人们在这里初见与告别。谈到机场这个影片中极为重要的背景设置,导演斯皮尔伯格说"每一个人搭乘过飞机的人可能都会有过呆在机场的经历,我不知道是不是从某种程度来说,会有人在机场呆的时间比在飞机上呆的时间还要长。机场确实是一个大社会的微观缩影,这里可以用餐、购物,还可以和朋友会面"这里不仅有着机场的工作人员,还有着形形色色的旅客。在这里呆上几个小时可能没有什么,可是若要呆上几天,几星期,甚至几个月,那就有点让人不可思议了,而这正是这部电影的前提。

  剧组人员称这部电影是完全虚构的,一个虚构的人物,来自一个虚构的国家。制片人说"这部电影是有关那些人们内心小小变化的瞬间的,这个人在这个小空间内遇到了不同的人,通过他的眼睛,我们可以看到美国人留给他的印象是什么,所以这将会是一个很有意思的故事。"维克多的扮演者汤姆·汉克斯觉得这个人物"在这个机场感受到了最为直接的美国文化,包括不同的种族文化"。

  斯皮尔伯格认为,我们每个人在生活中的某一些瞬间可能都会有一点像维克多,迷茫,不知自己所处的位置,然后寻找。汤姆·汉克斯则认为,"维克多终于明白这个世界是按照他自己的方式前进的,对他来说,这个世界难以征服,但是他已经身处其中,只有为自己挣一个好生活"。

◆花絮◆

  机场是这部影片的最大的背景,为了给观众一个逼真的视觉效果,剧组清了200多个工人,花费了20个星期搭建了一个真正的建筑物。和一般的布景不同,这个布景是一个三层高的独立的建筑。钢铁支架,玻璃墙,还有60000多块真正的大理石铺成的地面。至于那些电线等小的零部件更都是做得巨细无遗了。
  机场的四个扶梯都是为拍摄这部电影专门制作的,而且机场的航班公告牌也是真家伙,上面的起落航班都是按照肯尼迪国际机场的航班来制作的。
  影片那真实的布景还包括了35家著名的企业,包括探索频道书店(Discovery Store)、雨果·波士(Hugo Boss)、斯沃琪(Swatch)、吉野家(Yoshinoya),当然还有星巴克(Starbucks)。并且象星巴克等一些食品店的员工都是真正的受训员工,而不是演员。这逼真的布景,即使是见惯了大场面的汤姆·汉克斯和凯瑟琳·泽塔-琼斯也都叹为观止。

◆评价◆

  《幸福终点站》是斯皮尔伯格与汤姆·汉克斯的第四次携手制作,像《逍遥法外》一样走的是轻松的喜剧路线。也许它并不能成为今年最佳影片的候选,但它充满一个喜剧的简单的魔力——纯洁的爱,复杂的人性,还有充满了变数的人生。它成功与否与那些精致的布景并无多大关联,而是将取决于戏精汉克斯这次能从这个东欧移民的角色中发掘出多少幽默献给观众.

《海上钢琴师》之三——影片音乐元素浅谈

让我们来看看作曲家。Ennio Morricone 帮助本片的导演完成了许多电影的经典配乐(其中根据我的回忆,应该也包括天堂电影院)

The composer could be called a connoisseur of the 20th century music as he has included almost all the most possible and appreciable style of music for that time in this film.

p>First jazz

At that time in the US, the mainstream music of the pop is Jazz, which was at its beginning stages. It's not difficult to see that most of the music introduced in this film was in the style of Jazz, specifically Ragtime. Ragtime is the initial style of Jazz established by Joplin, the great beginner of jazz. The Peacherine Rag is a ragtime that was most often used at that time in the balls. And I have to say that ragtime is one of the jazz style that ask for quite a lot of skills in playing than the others. Even in the OST 1900's Madness, the improvisation of 1900 was also ragtime. But the difference is that most of his improvisation pieces are in minor, rather than most of the formally written ragtime, which were in a major tune.

Jazz is more a cozy music that most of the other styles in the 20th century as acknowledged by the world. But before Latino music such as Bossa Nova, Samba, and even beguine became the essence of jazz, the old style was more passionate and fast in the rhythm. So I would like to conclude that it is quite appropriate to apply jazz to the character of 1900.

最经典的原声大概就是两个人比赛的时候的音乐吧,其实但是1900弹的《平安夜》也是非常好的,真的。仔细听有一种非常安详的感觉。然后,就是几个爵士RAGTIME的作者原创了。比如THE CRAVE。这里音乐对于演奏者感情的描写也非常不错,比如在乐队指挥泪流满面的时候,乐曲正达到比较高潮的地方。

Second symphony

Most of the OST are played in a symphonic style. But one thing I have to mention, is that , the bigger amount of the OST are instrumental and actually, the style of the melody is not the classical symphony. Like you can hear the two versions of playing love in this film, which features both the light music piano version and the symphonic and was even transformed into the main theme, legend of the pianist.

Third Folk and ballad

第三类我觉得就是像在三等舱里为欧洲移民们演奏的曲子的那种类型的。TARANTELLA听说是捷克和波兰等地区的一种民间舞蹈,个人感觉非常又吉普赛的感觉。

最让人难忘大莫非ENDURING MOVEMENT。我自己看过,应该达到电影里的效果真的需要四手一起演奏,而这样的四手联弹的形式其实在钢琴演奏中也不少见。这里这个曲子由一段中音区的半音阶开始,副以低音的切分的节奏,后来在高音区又有了5个装饰音组成的花,但是有意思的是整个曲子还是在半音阶的逐渐爬升中进入高潮。

最终是钢琴的弦都可以点燃香烟了!而1900唯一一次挑衅对手,也正是用这些琴弦为他点烟......

关于《海上钢琴师》的故事还有很多,或许永远都没有结束。就像在有限的键盘上演奏的无限的乐曲一样。

下次的影评是《幸福终点站》 Steven Spielsberg导演,Tom Hanks主演。讲述一个欧洲人在美国机场的奇遇和背后的故事。

《海上钢琴师》 a legend of human’s life——音乐与生活漫谈

和我们同一个时代出生的人,有不少都应该有过琴童的经历——所谓学习钢琴的孩子。孩子们在家长的威逼利诱下,开始学习如何把一种非文字类型的语言,通过自己的手指与物体接触来表达。注意,这不是钢琴,也不是真正的音乐所应该包含的全部。音乐应当是对话,是畅通无阻的交流,就像1900演奏时的那个样子。音乐应该时快乐的,是发自内心的。


和我们同一个时代出生的人,有不少都应该有过琴童的经历——所谓学习钢琴的孩子。孩子们在家长的威逼利诱下,开始学习如何把一种非文字类型的语言,通过自己的手指与物体接触来表达。注意,这不是钢琴,也不是真正的音乐所应该包含的全部。音乐应当是对话,是畅通无阻的交流,就像1900演奏时的那个样子。音乐应该时快乐的,是发自内心的。

In fact, I have been amongst those boys and girls going to music tutoring in our early years in this world during the holiday time. At the very beginning, mom took me to a nearby school, carrying a portable keyboard; weighing more than 25 kg.  I was learning electrtone, not piano, Mom said. ‘We cannot afford a piano, and this keyboard is a gift from granny Xu. So you must learn to play excellent, okay?'

After two weeks of study at a public class in a holiday school of a nearby primary school, the teacher told my mother to find me a private tutor. 'I will soon be not qualified to be hi teacher.'

My first music tutor was a mid-aged man, face torn by years of work at a fabric factory, teeth buried deep in his mouth, who was a colleague of my auntie. He was really enthusiastic about music, which I, at that time, was not aware of. All I remembered was his roaring at me and the tear I swallowed into my mouth in silence after being beaten by him because of my bad performance during a lesson. Later, mom told me about his story of being son of one of the  KuoMin Party (中国国民党) soldier, whose complete childhood was spent in the cottage at the suburban area of shanghai with his father in prison, and his mother all day working.

The most inspiring story about him was that one day, his mom borrowed a quite ramshackle accordion from her factory. My first teacher had never been happier than that night, and kept playing the broken accordion all the night alongside the Huang Pu River, till the next morning, tear coming out of his eyes and dripped down on his face...

That is life, that is craze, and that is real music.

真的,音乐不应该是考级的压力下临时拼凑的技巧,不是依靠摇头晃脑来伪装的激情,更不是以金钱来衡量的演员的出场费,或者是其他任何和这个浮躁的社会有关的东西。音乐是感情,是我的老师脸颊上岁月和生活留下的眼泪,是1900看着窗外女孩时呆滞而沉醉的眼神,是MAX聆听留声机的曲子时颤抖的双手......

1900是个传奇,或许真的没有人知道这样一个人,或许就真的是编剧编出来的。但是他很真实,因为他很特别。他和他音乐是一面镜子,让身边所有的人不停的照自己:我的生活和他有这么大的区别的?他和他的音乐让人们不停的反省自己:MAX催促他上岸去追逐名利的时候,他拒绝了。因为他有生活,他有音乐,那已经足够了。我们对自己的生活满足了么?是好事,还是坏事?他让我们反省自己,文明的人类利用科学创造出了许多先进的东西,让我们的生活变得更加丰富多彩,绚丽无比,但是我们满足么,我们的生活真的变得更加多彩了么,还是我们已经浮躁到了需要不停的变化自己的生活,不停的发现新奇的东西,才能给自己一个生存下去的理由呢?还是,我们的生活变得越来越复杂以至于我们自己都不知道自己生活的乐趣在哪里,生存的目的在哪里?

这样看来,1900到应该是理想的境界了。

知足常乐。

1900就是这样做的。他的生活就是音乐,只有钢琴和音乐,虽然这不是每个人都能够做到的..... 放弃是需要勇气的。但是其中的轻松和舒畅的感觉,只有放弃的人自己能够体会。我不相信1900对于钱、名声和美女不感兴趣,但是他知道什么对于他最重要——音乐。这也是他能够在和爵士乐鼻祖比赛时,之所以能够尽情发挥并且胜利的原因。他的目标只有一个——赢得比那个人更多的掌声,证明自己比那个人弹得更好。就是这么简单。而那个自恃清高的家伙太沉重了,他虽然技艺出众,但是一直担心1900会超过他。因为失败意味着名誉,地位,金钱和美色的损失,而这些就是他生活的全部。多没渺小的全部......

音乐无距离。

1900就是这样说的。他的语言就是音乐。

1900真的不善于言辞,不让他就不会在和那个女孩距离那么近的时候都没有办法告诉她这个胶木唱片是他送给她的礼物。影片中,有这样一个片断,他在自己的房间里排练自己和她说话时的表情和动作。他真的有点笨拙。不是么?但是,就是因为不善言辞,他的音乐较之别人更加出色。那段全片的主题PLAYING LOVE(我以为应该翻译为"(用音乐)诠释爱情"),你听过后,应该能够明白。轻柔缓慢的,像一个害羞的处世不深的男子,倾诉自己的情感,娓娓道来......音乐结束的时刻,观众应该都能够感受1900当时的心情,而这些已经没有语言能够继续表达了。

人各有归宿。

1900就是这样做的。如果说1900最终选择了与VIRGINIA号一起沉没,是他的归宿,那么我们的归宿是什么呢?我不是一个宿命论者,但是相信人都有终点和起点,就像影片最后1900那段话中的大意一样:城市是这么的大,有这么多选择,没有尽头,而船一共就这么点长,钢琴的键盘也是有限的,有限长的船上有着无穷的故事;有限的钢琴键盘上,能够演奏无限的音乐。

归宿,就是有限。人生的目标和追求。1900选择了追求音乐,选择了和钢琴同在。在这个漫无边际的城市里,我们,特别是当代的大学生,真的应该给自己找一个归宿,找一个让自己安静下来的地方,或者是一个时空。诱惑太多,我们不知道怎样取舍。想得太多,生活反而过于复杂。

我们中的很多人,到现在仍然是在彷徨着......

但愿,我们能够从1900的音乐和生活中学会一些有用的东西。

《海上钢琴师》Legend of 1900(En)

一个出生在轮船上,成长在轮船上,并且最终没有离开轮船的人是什么样子的呢?

你能想这样的一个孩子,最终成为了音乐奇才,以至于所有乘坐过这艘船的乘客都对他赞不绝口么?

你知道他是怎样用自己的高超技艺让高傲的爵士乐鼻祖甘拜下风么?他又是怎样表达自己初恋的情感的么?

如果你想知道这些,影片会告诉你一切。

《海上钢琴师》,一段和20世纪一起诞生的传奇......

这期的影评是我2004年夏干看完写的,当时是英语文章,以后会有中文的补充。敬请光顾的朋友原谅!


Movie review of "Legend of 1900"

It has been several years after the new millennium arrived. And it has also been four years since the new century came into been. Still, the 20th century was regarded as a classic time of us human beings due to its great advancement in industry, art and the revolution in society and political structures.

But the century also have untold anecdotes and legend to tell. The film LEGEND OF 1900 has just shown me about one of them, the story of a fabulous pianist who spent all his life on the sea and has never ever stepped on the land.

The whole film has two threads, the chronicle was going though the experience of Max, who was the trumpet player of the yacht Virginian, the other one was of 1900s twined with that of Max's.

At the beginning of the film, Max was ready to sell his beloved trumpet to a instrument purchaser. Then he asked for permission of playing it for the last time. Coincidentally, the tune that he played was the same piece as the owner has on one of his disc. Max began with the story of 1900...

1900 was an orphan given up by his parents in the ball room of Virginian. Found by a workman Danny, 1900 grew up among the laborers of the ship, who taught him reading and writing. Unfortunately, Danny was severely hurt by a hook on his head. This sent him to see God. Again, 1900 turned orphan. One night, 1900 came to the first class and played piano in the ball room along. The passengers of Virginian were all fascinated by his performance. To all our astonishment, he taught himself on playing piano!

1900 soon became the pianist of the ship and was welcomed by almost every passenger who was once on this babe. Then Max came onboard. He played the trumpet fairly well and was accepted by the manager by chance. 1900 played not only for the rich passengers of the first class, he also played music for the poor in the third-class. His reputation had been growing everyday. Some famous music producers came onboard especially for a recording of 1900's fantastic music. But something terrible happened; the person who was said to have invented Jazz, came aboard to challenge 1900 on jazz. That man was so aggressive that he appeared to be overwhelming at the first place. And he did play very well that even 1900 himself was moved by his music. But the time of 1900 came when he suddenly stood up with a piece of cigar and played a incredibly complicated jazz improvisation. The whole audience kept silence for more that 10 seconds after he finished his tune...

Max has been looking for 1900 despite the disagreement of the manager. He then went back to the shop and was trying to steal the disc. He wanted to play it for 1900 so as to meet him for perhaps the very last time...

1900 had never been on the land, but it did not mean that he had never had that attempt. Standing on the stairs of the ship, 1900 was once so close to the land and the harbor of New York. But to almost everyone's surprise, he turned back to the deck after starring at the city for more that 3 minutes time.

In the final scene, the two threads meet each other as 1900 appeared in front of Max near the ballast cabin. They sit by each other. Max was still trying to persuade 1900 to leave the ship which would soon be bombarded into pieces and sent to the repair workshop. But 1900 said that the ship was the place where he was born and where he should die.

"The city is infinite. You have too many choices to make that you do not know exactly what you really want. The boat is definite and life is simple aboard. Just like the keyboard which is definite but the music you can play by is infinite. I cannot see the end of the city."

It all seems to be quite a sad story that a man shall have died like this. It also seems to be a tragedy of the dream catcher who marvels American as the island of treasure. But in my point of view, this is a fairly inspiring story. 1900 was an orphan with amazing talent. Although he was not allowed to play the piano in the ball room, his strong love for music expelled all the regulations.

There are four scenes that I cannot forget perhaps throughout my life. First, 1900 was playing piano in the ball room. The lady standing by was so fascinated by his performance that she could not help asking the captain about the boy's name. 1900 was playing with his heart and the occasion appeared to be so tranquil and enchanting. With the music from Mozart, we can always feel the essence of life. The second scene was when 1900 was playing against the black. That guy was really aggressive and overwhelming. He played fabulous music. But 1900, despite in the position of rival, still whimpered when he was really moved. After the improvisation, 1900 lit up a cigar with the burning steel strings of the piano. Arrogance, I have to say, is not exaggerating. The moment when he was playing PLAYINGMUSIC was also quite classic. The girl passing by must be the real source of 1900's innovation. The two pairs of eyes starring at each other, the air around have almost come to a still. The last one was of course the final scene of Max and 1900's meeting. What 1900 said was somehow the real problem of people living in cities. There is never an end of the world. You have one wife and one house; perhaps you will have some children. But there was too much for you to choose. The ship has an end. It is just this big. Sometimes he is right one have to find an end to his live so as to live on the ground.
